Otak-Otak Internship Program

VoC was fortunate to have an intern placed with us for two months under the Otak-Otak program. Otak2 is an internship program designed to attract 50 of the brightest Malaysian minds studying overseas and match them with organisations from the private, public and non-profit sectors in Malaysia to give them a taste of what it’s like to work here and provide them with a foundation from which they can build their careers. Participants are placed in internships with different organisations and at night attend networking sessions and events hosted by the organisations who are partners of the program.

VoC organised an evening session in partnership with the Malaysian Community and Education Foundation (MCEF), another Otak2 partner organisation. This was a chance for all the interns to get a taste of NGO work, so we wanted to be sure to make a big impression on them. We divided the interns into groups and asked them to perform a short skit based on a particular scenario having to do with children at risk, followed by a discussion of the issues that were raised. The skits were lively and quite hilarious, despite addressing serious topics head-on. As one intern wrote later about the program, “Most of us were accustomed to the ‘boring’ talks organised by the corporate partners and eventually we welcomed the respite from the usual networking events which are always so formal…It was a great way for people to have fun and at the same time expose them to pressing issues that are being faced by refugees and stateless children for example.”
